I Will Give You Rest: A Sermon by the Rev. Helen Harper

“I remember when I was a child in church, whenever I heard or read the words ‘heavy burden’ in Scripture, what came to my mind as a picture were many people walking along a road carrying large sacks that seemed way too heavy,” says the Rev. Helen Harper in today’s sermon. “When I think back to this image, I am still convinced that it’s an appropriate metaphor, because these days, more than any other time in history, so many of us are carrying heavy burdens or loads that are too heavy for us. We are living through the burden of abrupt change in our lives and losses of all types–losses of life, of lifestyles, and loss of income. We’re carrying heavy burdens of fear.”
