Alfred Price Honored with Bishop Walter Decoster Dennis Award

Alfred D. Price, longtime deputy to General Convention and leader in the Diocese of Western New York was given the Bishop Walter Decoster Dennis Award by the Union of Black Episcopalians at its annual conference in late July in Los Angeles.

The award, named for a former bishop suffragan of New York who was also a lawyer and professor of constitutional law and history, “acknowledges the contributions of persons who demonstrate significant contributions to the development, interpretation and identity of the Church, especially through its canons and its institutional mission.”

Price is a senior member of the House of Deputies, elected by the Diocese of Western New York ten times to represent it at the church’s triennial General Convention. In 1997, Price was elected by Province II to serve a six-year term on The Episcopal Church’s Executive Council, which governs the church between General Conventions. In 2003, Price was appointed by the president of the House of Deputies to serve on the Committee on the State of the Church; he was re-appointed in 2006, serving as its chair. He was also appointed by the Executive Council to the churchwide Budgetary Funding Task Force, serving from 2004-2009.

In the diocese, Price has served as chair of the Diocesan Architectural Commission for more than three decades. He has served on the standing committee of the diocese, which is the council of advice to the bishop, and numerous diocesan bodies. he is an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Eggertsville, where he is a licensed lay reader, worship leader, and chalice-bearer. He has also served as acolyte master and confirmation class instructor.

Price served from 1977 – 2019 as a professor of urban and regional planning in the School of Architecture & Planning at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where in 2003 he was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Teaching. He and his wife, the Very Rev Cn. Barbara J. Price, have four adult children and nine grandchildren, ranging in age from twenty-two to four. In his spare time, Price is an avid golfer.
